Should children be given an allowance? If so, what for?  Doing chores? Meeting their own personal goals? Good grades? Improved behavior? When should kids receive money? How much should they get?

The only opinion I have is that the kids shouldn’t get paid to do their chores, because everyone needs to contribute and do their share- I don’t get paid to do-they shouldn’t either. At some point I think we will pay the kids for good grades, probably starting their freshman year (which would be this year for one). But I haven’t figured out any amounts or anything.

I have started paying my girls for doing extra chores. They have their set of jobs, but sometimes I ask them to do other things. It’s also kind of training them for the next step. Eventually, these “extra” jobs will become their regular jobs and I might pay them to do other things. Right now they get one or two quarters, depending on the job. (My girls are 5 and almost 4.)

They are learning to keep their money safe (Mimi already lost some of her money and I think she learned that lesson.) Also, I want them to be able to spend their own money for some things and understand what things cost. I am planning a trip to the Hello Kitty store, that’s going to be our first lesson!
