This week I was honored to receive the Beautiful Blogger Award from Amanda at Tales from the Crib. With every honor comes responsibility. Instead of a speech, it’s my duty to share seven little known facts about myself and then nominate other great blogs.

So, here’s my list of random things. Let’s see how many of these things are new to you.

  1. I have a secret desire (or maybe it’s not-so-secret desire because I tell people all the time) to have a British accent. Don’t start making fun of me or calling me Madonna yet. My husband threatened to switch seats on the plane if I didn’t stop using my faux accent on the flight home from London. I just think everything coming out of your mouth sounds smarter if you say it with a little, Super Nanny twang.
  2. I always thought I’d have all boys. Growing up I was mostly a tomboy – I liked sports, getting dirty, and playing outside. My neighborhood was predominantly male and I grew up around boys. As a result, I had lots of “guy friends” over the years and always pictured myself raising boys since I wasn’t a girly-girl. I’m not at all disappointed to raise girls and have loved watching them be tough but girly (i.e. afraid of spiders but not intimated to compete with the boys.)
  3. I have a HUGE fear of birds. My husband thinks it’s ridiculous that such a fearless person can turn into a mess when a bird gets too close for comfort. Where does this crazy fear come from? I was attacked by a flock of geese when I was four and they pecked holes in my tights. So, much for a trip to the park to feed the ducks. As an adult, my husband coaxed me into the aviary at the Wild Animal Park in San Diego to overcome my fear. Immediately upon entering the closed facility a bird swooped down from a corner and tried to nest in my hair. (My husband says it tried to land on my shoulder, but I swear it was trying to birth its young in my lovely fro.) Needless to say, I ran out screaming, nearly wiping out a few small children in my pathway to the exit.
  4. I don’t like pie. I’ve actually confessed this one before but it’s always so shocking to people.
  5. I don’t like baseball either. But I’m totally patriotic. I promise. I vote. I pay taxes.
  6. I don’t know how to sing. My husband and kids are all are great singers. It must be paternally genetic or something. My side of the family hardly sings, “Happy Birthday” and would never be caught dead singing Christmas carols. I adore that my husband sings my girls to sleep most nights. I’m not jealous at all. It’s an honor I can only adore.
  7. I cry every year on the first day of school. I’m not entirely sure what it is that gets the waterworks flowing each fall, but it’s real. My “baby” starts kindergarten this fall and I asked my husband to take the day off work to help me cope. I started off asking for a week, so I figure I’ve made progress. What a wuss, I know.

I’ll be taking a week or so off from my blog due to a family emergency.

When my girls were toddlers they used to think this fast food restaurant was called, “Barbie’s.”  In hopes of someday spotting the blondie at her eatery, they’d always ask me, “How come she has her own restaurant, but she never even eats her?”

In case you missed it, Kate’s coming back for 15 more minutes of fame. I hope this doesn’t ruin how I feel about DWTS. I am quite the addict. (Probably due to my two left feet problem.) I even got to attend a taping of the show a season or two back and met Tom and Samantha. I’ll give her a shot, but I hope she doesn’t yell at her new partner, the way she did to her last one.

Here’s the lineup of stars to be paired up on the next season of Dancing With the Stars.
Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood

Nicole Scherzinger

Jake Pavelka and Chelsie Hightower

Question: What do you think of the new lineup?

I’ve been doing a little behind the scenes work on 3girlsandapug.com that you may or may not have noticed. On the right hand side you’ll see I’ve added a new Facebook widget. If you haven’t become a fan of 3girlsandapug you should do it today. Also, thanks for spreading the word to all your friends. We’re getting new friends everyday and who can’t use more friends?

For all of you non-Facebookers, we’re finally up and running on Feedburner. Hooray! So, if you’d like to get email updates on my posts sign-up on the right hand side of the page. It’s easy and I promise I won’t spam you or sell your information because I’m a busy mom, too, and I hate when people do that to me.

Thanks for spreading the word about my blog  through emails, Facebook and other means. It’s exciting to see that I have readers that live in New Delhi and in islands off the coast of Africa. I have Facebook friends with unfamilar faces but whose lives I’m sure are so much the same. We’re all just looking for a little more joy in the journey of life and it’s great to do it together.

I hope the new changes are helpful. I’m always open to feedback on how I’m doing, so let me know if you have any suggestions, requests or feedback. You guys are great!

Trying to get your taxes done? Paperwork ready for the accountant?

I’ve listed below a few items that you can deduct on your taxes that you may not be aware of and few that you likely need before you file that 1020. Be sure to consult tax professional about any of the items listed below.

Surprise Deductions:

• Zoo memberships. (Who knew? But our zo is considered a donation to a non-profit organization and is therefore a membership is tax deductable. Be sure to ask your local zoo and/or your accountant.)

• Donations made to your child’s school and/or PTA. (We all write checks out of guilt to help out our kid’s schools and now you can deduct it on your taxes, too.)

• Magazine subscriptions. (If you order these publications as a work-related expense then you can deduct these from your annual tax bill.)

• Your accountant. (Make sure you keep your receipt from your accountant for preparing last year’s taxes or for any software you purchase if you prefer to DIY. It’s also a deduction.)

My Annual Checklist:
• 1099s and W2s
• Interest loans statements
• Mileage (You can also include any mileage that you do for charity/volunteer work)
• Property tax
• HOA fees
• Homeowners/renters insurance
• Mortgage interest
• Student loan interest
• Charitable donations – monetary or supplies

If you own your own home business or work from home you may be able to deduct these items:
• Business supplies (business cards, paper, equipment, tables, desks, etc.)
• Gifts (Items you buy for clients)
• Business trips
• Business meals (You’re allowed a certain amount for each meal while you are on a trip, and you can also count meals you have with clients and potential clients)
• Mileage (You can also include any mileage that you do for charity/volunteer work)
• Postage (stamps, shipping packages, etc.)
• Membership fees
• Tax preparation fees and bookkeeping fees
• Vehicle registration fees
• Union dues
• Home office space expenses (that percentage of your home that is dedicated to your office)
• Home phone
• Cell phone (that percentage of your calls that are business related)
• Internet
• Cable
• Water/sewer/trash bills to the city

Is it bad to admit that I already daydream about retirement when my oldest child is still in elementary school and my youngest hasn’t even started yet? I haven’t figured out the details on how or where we’ll spend our golden years but I’m hoping it includes a beach chair, a ukulele for serenades, and endless chocolate-covered strawberries.

The best place to start planning for retirement is to know where you want to finish. Where would you like to retire? How much money do you think you’ll need?

Once you’ve figured out when you want to retire and how much you’ll need to save then you can count backwards. Using your estimates for the future should give you an idea of where you need to be in 10 years, 2 years, and now to reach your future financial goals.

Once you’ve figured out what you need to do, find a goal you can start with immediately and implement it into your day-to-day life. Maybe the first step is to cut out all trips to the drive thru out or maybe it’s as simple as tracking your expenses and trimming out another expense. Make realistic short-terms goals and keep your long-term goal in the forefront of your mind.

If you have a 401(K) plan then this is a great time of year to evaluate how aggressive your investing is and to increase your contributions when you get a raise.

Reward yourself along the way. As you begin to reach your mini-goals of paying off debt or stockpiling cash in your savings account, be sure to reward yourself as you reach your milestones. It feels good to pause and enjoy the vistas along a great hike before you reach your final destination. Stop and enjoy a moment before you keep climbing up the mountain. It will motivate you to keep going when you hit the rough spots along the way.

Goals are really just talk until you put them in writing. Be sure to put your plan in writing and keep it somewhere you can look at it frequently to keep yourself motivated.

Involve the kids, too. We recently sat down with our little ones and told them about parts of our financial plan for the next few years. Our reward will be a nice family trip next spring. We brainstormed as a family ways we could cut some things out of our budget. They actually suggested turning lights off when they leave a room and cutting out extras like eating out and movies. (What a motivated bunch of kids!)

Question: What age do you hope to retire?

I’d love to have some of my readers share their insights.
Please, please, please don’t be worried about your idea. I have no ability to share tips in areas requiring a green thumb or a glue gun, so it would really be a great service if you’d share your special skills.

I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email at mom@3girlsandapug.com.

Thanks!
